Description

A long terrace of houses dating to approximately 1815-1820, built as part of the Portman Estate development. The terrace is constructed of stock brick with stuccoed ground floors, and has slate roofs. It rises four storeys above a basement. The fronts of numbers 181, 183, and 191 to 207 are two windows wide, while numbers 185 to 189 are three windows wide. Semicircular arched doorways are present on the left-hand side, leading to panelled doors set within pilastered or moulded jambs, with cornice heads, fanlights, some being patterned. The windows are primarily recessed sashes, many with glazing bars. Numbers 181 to 189 have semicircular arched ground floor windows, with No. 195 featuring intersecting Gothic glazing bars. Upper floors have flat, gauged arches. The parapets have stone copings. Cast iron balconies with a geometric-anthemion pattern are present on the first floors, and the front is protected by cast iron urn-finialed area railings. Number 181 has a doorway on its return facing Ivor Place. The terrace forms part of an extensive sequence of Georgian terraced houses within London.
