Description

This is a terrace of houses built in the early to mid-19th century. Originally known as Grand Junction Road and now numbered 107 to 121 (odd) and 129 to 161 (odd), Sussex Gardens, it was an important part of the original Bayswater layout. The terrace is constructed of brown brick in Flemish bond, with some parts reddened. The ground floor is stuccoed and channelled, with stucco dressings. The upper floors are brick. The terrace is four storeys high with a basement.

The design is a balanced composition, featuring a prominent central breakforward of 14 bays, with a 16-bay wing to the right and 13 bays to the left (although 8 bays on the left have been replaced by a 20th-century building). Four-bay returns are present at each end. The central section has projecting porches supported by Ionic columns, with round-arched sash windows with margin lights. The outer bays have pilastered entrances with overlights and sash windows. A stucco balustrade is incorporated into the first floor of the central section, while iron balconies are present on the first floor of the wings. The windows are sash windows, some with glazing bars, and are set within architraves. There is a cornice at the level of the third floor. The terrace returns in four bays to Radnor Place. Original iron basement railings remain.
