Description

Nos. 1 to 5 Montagu Square are a group of terraced town houses built around 1810-11 as part of the Montagu-Bryanston Square development for the Portman Estate, with alterations in the mid-19th century, and No. 4 specifically designed by J.T. Parkinson. They are constructed of stock brick with channelled stucco to the ground floors, and have concealed slate roofs. The houses are five storeys high over basements, except for No. 4, which is four storeys. Each house has a three-window front. Semicircular arched doorways are on the left-hand side, featuring panelled doors within pilaster surrounds and plain fanlights. The ground floor sashes are set within segmental bows. Apart from No. 4, mid-19th century stucco canted bays rise above the segmental bows through the first and second floors, these bays being finished with cornices and blocking courses, some of which are channelled and enriched. Otherwise, the windows are recessed sashes under flat, gauged arches. No. 4 features rusticated sashes but has blind windows to the third floor. A plat band finishes the ground floor stuccowork, with Nos. 2, 3, and 5 having a stucco sill band to the fourth floor. Crowning stucco cornices and blocking courses top the facades. A continuous cast iron lattice-patterned balcony runs across the first floors. The area railings are cast iron with acorn finials.
