Description
A terrace of twelve town houses, numbered 1 to 12 (excluding number 8), was built around 1828-30, likely by G. Taylor. The buildings are situated in Connaught Place, City of Westminster. The frontages facing the street are of brown brick and stucco at ground floor level, with stucco detailing on the upper elevations. The Hyde Park side of the buildings is stucco, and they are topped with slate roofs. The terrace is five storeys high, with basements below. Each house has two or four windows wide. The main entrances, usually on the right side, feature projecting stucco porticoes in the Doric style. The recessed sash windows are generally fitted with glazing bars and are set under flat, gauged brick arches. Stucco cornices and parapets run along the tops of the buildings. The elevations facing Bayswater Road and Hyde Park have tripartite windows on the first floor, which open onto wrought iron balcony-verandahs with tent roofs. Number 5 was rebuilt to match the original appearance after suffering damage in the Second World War. The terrace is part of the early development of the Tyburnia area, which was originally planned in 1827 by S.P. Cockerell for the Bishop of London’s Estate with development later modified by G Gutch.
