Description

This is a terrace of houses with shops, likely built in the late 18th century or possibly the mid-18th century. The buildings are stucco-faced with slate roofs. They are three storeys high with dormered mansards. Each house has a front of two windows. The shop fronts have been altered in the early to mid-19th century and again in the mid-20th century. The upper floors have recessed sash windows without glazing bars, topped with flat arches. The return elevation of numbers 2 and 2A has four similar windows and two simple dormers dating to the early 19th century. The return elevation of number 8 features a doorcase with a corniced architrave, dating to around 1800. The terrace is part of the Shepherd Market development, which was laid out around 1735 and constructed around 1746. Edward Shepherd was the builder, designer, and promoter of the scheme, which was built on the Grosvenor and Cavendish Estates.
