Description

The Paddington British Rail Maintenance Depot, West Block, is a significant structure built between 1966 and 1968, designed by Paul Hamilton of Bicknell and Hamilton. It serves as workshops, offices, and a boiler house for road vehicles associated with British Rail's Paddington Goods Yard. The building features a reinforced concrete frame, with the upper floors clad in glazed ceramic mosaic and a flat roof. Its irregular, expressionist triangular plan comprises four main storeys, situated on land that was excavated for the elevated Harrow Road and M40 Westway.

The ground floor houses the boiler room beneath the projecting first-floor workshops, which are topped with funnel-like chimneys. Above the workshops and offices, there are rest rooms located in a tall staircase and lift block that rises from the broader entrance, known as the 'stern' end. Access to the building is possible from the first-floor roadway or the exposed semi-basement. The first and upper floors feature bands of continuous metal mullion-light glazing.

The interior of the building remains largely unaltered and is noted for its high-quality finishes. The main floors are designed in an open-plan layout, and a standout feature is the staircase, which has a continuous and sinuous balustrade clad in ceramic.

The Paddington Maintenance Depot represents the peak of British Railways' post-war building efforts, showcasing a progression from lightweight prefabrication to the more substantial, romantic, and sculptural forms evident in this design.
