Description
Nos 1 and 2 Orme Square are a pair of mid-19th century houses that have been altered. They are made of unpainted stucco and consist of three storeys plus a basement. The overall design features ten windows, with the central four set forward and accented by rusticated quoins. The outer bays have projecting ground floors with pilastered entrances leading to the inner bays. The doors are panelled and there is a balustrade above. The ground floor is rusticated, and the windows are square-headed with architraves on the first and second floors; they are sash windows with plate glass. The window openings on the first floor to the right have been altered. There is a decorative band above the first floor and a frieze with a console cornice above the second floor. The projecting bays have a balustraded parapet, and there are cast iron area railings. A plaque from the London County Council on No 1 commemorates Sir Rowland Hill, a postal reformer who lived here from 1795 to 1879.
