Description
No. 5 Great Newport Street is a terrace house from the late 17th century, although it has been altered with a refaced front in the 1930s. The building features a black polished tile facing and has a concealed roof. It stands four storeys tall with a basement and is three windows wide. The doorway is located to the right and is framed by a stylized architrave from the 1930s. The windows are plate glass with square-headed metal casements, but they maintain the original rhythm and proportions of the fenestration. The parapet has coping. Inside, the interior has been significantly altered, but it still features the original closed string dog leg staircase with turned balusters and square newels. Notably, this house was the home of Sir Joshua Reynolds, as indicated by a plaque from the Greater London Council.
