Description
The Frigate Public House is a corner public house built around 1890. It features red brick construction with painted stone bands and dressings, topped by a slate roof. This lively Jacobethan "gin palace" stands four storeys high with a dormered mansard roof. The building is two windows wide, with a corner turret and a three-window return along Upper St. Martin's Lane.
The ground floor showcases an elaborate painted stone and polished granite façade, featuring a corner entrance with double panelled and glazed doors, a fanlight, and segmental arched bar windows divided by enriched pilasters. The upper floors have sash windows set in stone frames; the first-floor windows are semicircular arched with keystones and enriched spandrels, while the second floor features oriel windows with scrolled pediments and enriched aprons. The building also has pedimented stucco gabled attics and a balustraded parapet above a dentil cornice. The corner turret is topped with a cupola and a short spire that includes a weathervane. The interior, designed in the 1970s, has a naval theme.
