Gv II

Cinemas. c.1923 by Verity and Beverley, built as a Super Cinema. Portland stone ashlar on steel frame, pantiled roof. Free interpretation of Beaux Arts French neo-classicism with feature of domed corner. 4 main storeys. 5 bays wide, rounded corner and 7-bay return to Jermyn Street. c.1970 remodelling of ground floor with entrance to cinemas on corner and deep canopy-fascia. Tripartite recessed casements to 1st floor. 3-window centre of 2nd floor with archivolt arched windows and carved reveals, the outer bays with segmental pedimented windows. Bracketed cornice at 3rd floor level with balustraded parapet surmounted by urns, the 3rd floor set back; enriched frieze with plaques inscribed Music and Drama. The rounded corner is crowned by a coloured mosaic dome surmounted by a stone arched, octagonal lantern with pantile cupola-roof. Plainer but similar treatment to Jermyn Street.
