Description
Carlton House is a block of offices and shops built around 1907 by F.E. Williams. It features Portland stone ashlar with channelled pulvinated coursing at the podium and smooth channelling above, topped with a slate roof. The building has a busy classical façade with some Baroque details, rising five storeys and including two tiers of dormers in the roof.
The main range is symmetrical and six windows wide, with slightly advanced entrance bays on either side and a two-window extension to the right. The podium ground floor, which includes a mezzanine, has recessed archivolt arched doorways, with the doorway of No. 11D featuring a carved keystone. The shop fronts date from the mid to later 20th century and are located beneath a dentil corniced entablature.
The upper floors are adorned with architraved sash windows, featuring pediments on the second floor. The six-window range has third and fourth floor windows set in archivolt arched recesses, flanked by Ionic pilasters that support the main bracketed entablature. The flanking entrance bays and the right-hand extension display swags on the aprons of the third floor windows, above the entablature. The building also includes two-storey attics with an open pedimented bay and crowning domes topped with urns. Ornate cast iron balconettes are present on the second floor.
