Description
Nos. 111 and 112 Jermyn Street is a building constructed as a shop and woollen warehouse with offices between 1900 and 1901 by Reginald Morphew. It is made of Portland stone and has a slate roof. This impressive five-storey structure features a sober Free Style palazzo design with restrained Arts and Crafts details, all executed to a high standard. The building is two windows wide, with a five-sided corner turret and a three-window wide return to Babmaes Street.
The ground floor showcases bold, massive rock-faced masonry, featuring two large segmental arched shop windows that include panelled and glazed doorways. Along Babmaes Street, there are three similar display windows set back from the corner, along with a segmental arched office entrance adorned with carved ornamentation on the reveals.
On the upper floors, the windows are segmental arched three-light mullioned casement windows, with flat arches on the first floor. These windows have beaded edge reveals and egg and dart enrichment on the arches of the third floor, where Arts and Crafts metal wall plates are also used. The top floor's windows are treated as an Ionic colonnaded galleria beneath a deep bracketed cornice. The corner turret features casements only on the first, fourth, and fifth floors, topped by an octagonal belvedere with an ogee roof. The floor windows facing Babmaes Street are set well back from the corner, enhancing the building's massiveness.
