Description
The Theatre Royal, formerly the Royal Cinema, is a Grade II listed building located on Ward's End. It was built in 1904 and converted around 1930. Designed by Richard Horsfall, the building is constructed of ashlar with ashlar dressings and showcases a Baroque Revival style.
The west front features seven windows, with a rusticated ground floor that includes three central round-headed entrances adorned with vermiculated rustication. These entrances are flanked by single boarded windows, with a recessed door and window to the right of each. Above the central three entrances, there is a giant Ionic portico with a circular window in the pediment, flanked by reclining figures.
The upper section has five windows with moulded surrounds and prominent keystones, featuring alternating segmental and triangular pediments. Above these, there are five smaller windows with moulded surrounds and aprons. The outer bays are topped with oval windows. The slightly projecting outer pavilions each have two small sash windows on the first floor, with a single sash window above in a moulded and pedimented surround. Above these, there is an oval window with a carved surround in an open segmental pediment. To the right, there is a single bay over a segmental cart entrance, with a single sash window above in a moulded surround.
The interior was remodelled around 1930 when the building was converted to a cinema, featuring standard Art Deco style decoration.
