Description

The Westgate Public House is a building that dates back to around 1800, with later alterations from the late 19th century. It consists of two houses and an attached weaving wing, now functioning as a public house. The exterior features thin courses of squared stone with a plinth and painted ashlar dressings, topped with a roof made of thick stone slates and a rendered chimney.

The house on Westgate has three storeys and a cellar, with a window arrangement of three sets of one-over-one lights. The right side of the building, which faces Union Street, includes a slightly later house. The Westgate elevation has an internal step leading up to a renewed door at the center, framed by a narrow stone surround. There are similar surrounds for the renewed sash windows, with smaller windows on the top floor.

On the right return to Union Street, the upper windows follow a similar style, but the top floor features paired lights. The ground floor displays a pub front with a door on the left and two lights on the right, flanked by pilasters that have carved brackets supporting a Gothic hood with three shallow arches and a flower-stopped drip mould. The ground floor windows have etched glass panels that are likely from the late 20th century. The interior of the building has been largely remodeled in the late 20th century.
