Description
The Golden Lion Public House is an inn with various dates from the 17th century onwards. The front facing High Street dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century and features three storeys and four bays, rendered with stucco and rusticated quoins. The ground floor has a carriage entrance on the left side and a 19th-century bar front with a central doorway, a pedimented door hood on scrolled brackets, and a moulded cornice. The first floor has four flush sash windows with moulded hoods on scrolled brackets, while the second floor has four sashes with moulded wooden frames. Above is a cornice with a fragment of a parapet. The old tile roof is hipped at the east.
On the North Street side, the return wall of the High Street front jetties above the ground floor, with the jetty projecting further to the north than to the south. There are two sashes on the first floor with architraves and two small modern windows on the second floor. Further north is a 17th-century or early 18th-century timber-framed building with two storeys and a jettied first floor. This section has a brick plinth, with the ground floor partly weatherboarded and partly rendered, featuring a variety of window openings. The rendered first floor contains five sashes, and the old tile roof has one stack through the ridge. To the north are the remains of another timber-framed range. In the angle between the High Street and North Street ranges is an early 19th-century brick addition of three storeys with a hipped slate roof.
