Description
Salem Chapel is a Baptist chapel built in 1847, as noted on a plaque on the building. It is constructed of stock brick and has a principal elevation facing London Road that is three bays wide and two storeys high. The central bay projects and features stucco quoins at the ground floor, along with a wide central doorway flanked by stucco pilasters. The upper floor has paired brick pilasters, an open pediment, and a central Egyptian window with a stucco architrave. The flanking bays contain small square windows at the ground floor and Egyptian windows above, which have hoods supported by tapering brackets and plain stucco plaques above them. The building is topped with a stucco parapet. The return elevation facing St Andrews Road also has three bays with segmental-headed windows set in recessed panels. The original cast-iron railings, standards, and gates were made by Wedlake Thompson of Hornchurch. An additional lecture room was added in 1868, but it is not of special interest.
