Description
The Romford War Memorial, designed by architect J.W. Hammond, was completed in 1921 and is made of Portland stone. It serves as the centerpiece of Coronation Gardens, located near the Grade II-listed Town Hall.
The memorial features a plain wheel-head cross atop a tall, tapering plinth, which has a moulded cap and base on a two-stepped plinth. The front of the plinth has sunken panels inscribed with the words: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE PEOPLE OF ROMFORD WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE WARS OF 1914-1919 1939-1945 THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." The sides of the plinth list 361 names.
Additionally, stone slabs added to the base of the memorial commemorate 141 civilians who died in the Second World War on the upper step, and 255 servicemen who fell on the lower step.
A Burma Star memorial stone is located next to the cross.
