Description

The Odeon Cinema, located at 52-56 Renfield Street in Glasgow, was designed by Frank Verity and Samuel Beverley in 1934. This large Art Deco cinema occupies half a city center block, bordered by Renfield Street, West Regent Street, West Nile Street, and West Regent Lane. The main block features a curved entrance facade with projecting fins and a cream-painted stone elevation facing Renfield Street. Behind this, there is a six-story red brick block that houses the auditorium.

The main block has a curved canopy above a modern entrance at ground level. It includes five full-height windows that span the first and second floors, with projecting fins between them, flanking additional bays and outer fins. Above modern shopfronts, there is a six-bay, two-story block along Renfield Street, with a further curved section set back at the corner on the fourth and fifth floors.

The rear block presents five blank bays to West Regent Street, divided vertically by ribs and featuring patterned brick detailing at the wallhead, along with a canopy over the pavement. The six-story block wraps around the corner to West Nile Street, with floors separated by brick string courses and regular window arrangements. There is a taller blank block facing West Nile Street, and the elevation to West Regent Lane has irregular window placements and brick ribs.

Inside, the cinema has been altered. The original metal-framed windows remain in the main block, while replacement windows have been installed on Renfield Street. The brick elevations feature original metal-framed pivot windows, and cast-iron rainwater goods are present.
