Description
The Machine Gun Corps Memorial is a Grade II* listed structure featuring a bronze statue and machine guns, with a pedestal made of pale grey Italian marble. The memorial showcases a standing naked figure representing David, who holds a two-handed sword. This figure stands on a tall, square pedestal that has lower wings, each supporting a Vickers machine gun that is accurately depicted. Each gun is adorned with two laurel wreaths around the barrel, and beneath each gun is a tin helmet and a tool bag. The front of the pedestal bears the inscription: “ERECTED TO / COMMEMORATE / THE GLORIOUS / HEROES / OF THE / MACHINE GUN / CORPS / WHO FELL IN / THE GREAT / WAR / Saul hath slain his thousands / but David his tens of thousands.” On the reverse side of the memorial, there is a detailed inscription that outlines the history of the unit and its casualties.
