Description

No 139 Piccadilly is a terraced town house built around 1760 to 1764 or 1798, which was remodeled and refaced in 1891 by R S Wornum, matching the style of the adjacent No 138. The building is constructed from Portland stone and features a slate roof. It showcases a Neo-classical revival style with elements reminiscent of Louis XVI. The house has three tall storeys, an attic storey, and a dormered mansard, sitting above a basement. It is four windows wide.

The ground floor is rusticated and features an arcade with a deep-set doorway to the right, which has a fanlight and square-headed sashes set deep within the arcade. The upper floors have architraved sash windows, with pediments above the first-floor windows. These are framed by a giant Ionic order of pilasters, topped with an entablature that continues from No 138, and a similarly pilastered attic. The original parapet balustrades have been removed, and the dormers are pedimented. The first-floor windows have bowed balustered balconettes, and there are carved relief plaques with swags beneath the second-floor windows. A stone balustrade encloses the area in front of the house. The hall retains a possibly original or more likely late 18th-century plasterwork ceiling, featuring an enriched bracket cornice.
