Description

A restaurant and flats, dating to 1904, designed by Collcutt and Hamp. The building was originally a showroom, and incorporates No 137 Piccadilly. It is constructed of white artificial stone, possibly Doulton's Carrara ware, with some green ceramic brick, and has a slate roof. The architectural style is exuberant and eclectic, described as "Flemish Baroque."

The Piccadilly frontage is exceptionally tall and narrow, rising seven stories, and features a pediment and gable end. The Old Park Lane frontage is five stories with a two-tiered attic. The Piccadilly front has three windows and a long nine-window return. The ground floor has a central entrance flanked by display windows. These are all framed by Doric columns, the outer ones in pairs and rusticated, supporting an entablature. The upper floors have central windows within Gibbs surrounds and segmental pediments. Through-storey canted bays with architraved casements flank these windows. The top two floors feature two-light windows. A bracketed cornice sits above the fifth floor. The shaped gable end to the attic storeys is finished with a giant, broken segmental pediment, featuring green brick banding and a figure sculpture, topped by an ornamental obelisk finial. The attic windows have ornamental ironwork balconies.

The Old Park Lane return is articulated by a rusticated pilaster order, similar to the Piccadilly front. It has a central entrance framed by rusticated columns and a segmental pediment. The upper floors feature architraved and pedimented casements, with four-storey canted bay windows flanking the three central bays. Two tiers of stone-framed, pedimented dormers are present.
