Description

Burberry's is a grand retail building located at Nos. 18 to 22 Haymarket in the City of Westminster, constructed in 1912 by architect Walter Cave. This stone-faced corner block features a slate roof and exhibits a style that combines Edwardian neo-Mannerism with a balanced Beaux Arts composition. The building stands three storeys tall with a slate mansard roof and is five windows wide, including a narrow staircase bay on the left side that returns to Orange Street.

The ground floor showcases unaltered display windows and a central entrance with double doors, framed by a Mannerist order of Doric engaged columns that support an entablature. The first and second floors are distinguished by a giant order of French Ionic columns that create a grand arcade, with the second-floor windows set as lunettes within the clean-cut ashlar arches. Banded pilasters mark each end of the elevation, and a modillion cornice features a balustrade between enriched dormers. An ornate bracketed clock is positioned at the second-floor level, and similar architectural details are present on the Orange Street return.
