Description
Nos. 92 to 98 on Westgate Road are shops and offices built around 1895. The building is constructed from sandstone ashlar and consists of four storeys and attics. It features a two, three, one, and three bay arrangement, with a curved left corner bay facing Cross Street. The central entrance for the offices is located in the middle of the seven right bays, showcasing a panelled double door beneath a keyed oeuil-de-boeuf and cartouche, flanked by rusticated pilasters. Similar pilasters frame the shops, with the left shop having a boarded covering at the ends and fascia, while an entablature runs over the shops on the right. A bracketed cornice is present above the ground floor entrance, which curves out to form a balcony with a low iron railing. The building features a giant Ionic Order above, defining each group of windows, and Tuscan Order pilasters flanking each first-floor window, which is set under a pulvinated frieze and cornice. Scrolled pediments are positioned over the central window of each group of three. The second-floor windows are adorned with a blind balustrade, and there is a second-floor entablature with a modillioned cornice. The fourth-floor windows are framed by keyed architraves. The left curved corner includes a one-bay turret topped with a high dome.
