Description
The Falcon Hotel Public House is a late 19th-century purpose-built hotel located at the corner of St John's Hill and Falcon Road. It features a continuous frontage along both roads and consists of nine varied bays across three storeys plus a garret. The building is constructed of red brick with stone details.
The ground floor façade of the public house includes stone and granite pilasters, with a central entrance positioned on the curve of the corner, topped by a semi-circular fanlight and a prominent pediment. There are subsidiary entrances at each end. The first and second floor windows are adorned with elaborate stone architraves, and only the second floor windows have iron window guards and stone pediments.
Giant pilasters with stylised Corinthian capitals are placed between the first and second floors, supporting a heavily bracketed cornice that features a panelled brick parapet and stone ball decorations. The three entrances are highlighted at the roof level by brick gables at each end, which are decorated with stone copings and balls, while the centre is accentuated by a truncated pyramidal roof surrounded by an iron balcony and flagstaff. The building also has prominent chimneys.
Internally, the hotel is rich in decorative features, including cut brilliant glass behind the bar display and in the partitions between the bars. There are leaded lights in the draught lobby, original mirrors, and full-storey cast iron columns with stylised Corinthian capitals.
