Description
The Old Lodge and Chapel of the Sacred Heart at Digby Stuart College was built in 1853 by William Wardell. This simple structure, designed in a 14th century Gothic style, is made of coursed squared stone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a steep pitched slate roof. The chapel was originally intended as a "transeptal chapel" for visitors and opened into the chancel of the main chapel, which was destroyed during the last war.
On the north wall, there are two three-light windows with tracery heads, one featuring daggers and the other mouchettes. The west gable has a rose window. Inside, the chapel boasts a ribbed waggon roof adorned with painted panels and an elaborate painted stone reredos designed as a 14th century Gothic arch with canopied wings, which house sacred figures.
The adjacent Old Lodge, facing the street, is built in a similar style and uses similar materials. It has a symmetrical design, with the main storey featuring a pointed-arch door flanked by two pairs of cusped-head two-light windows on each side. A string course steps up over the slightly advanced entrance bay. The upper floor has a large central steep-pitched half-gable and smaller flanking half-gables. The central half-gable contains a complex three-light window, with the middle light filled by a sacred figure beneath a canopy. Each flanking half-gable has a mullion-and-transom two-light window. The listing does not include the stone-faced range to the north of the Old Lodge or the modern brick chapel to the south of the Chapel of the Sacred Heart.
