Description
The Anglican Chapel at East Finchley Cemetery is a funerary chapel built in 1854, designed by Barnett and Birch. It features a facing of Kentish ragstone, a brick plinth, and stone dressings, with slate roofs. The chapel has a cruciform layout, comprising a shallow rectangular apse with one bay, a crossing, north and south transepts each with one bay, and a two-bay nave. There is an exterior entrance porch with one rib-vaulted bay and a wood panel screen forming the narthex at the west end of the nave. The structure includes clasping and angle buttresses throughout. The east elevation has a blocked recess indicating the position of the altar and a tracery rose window. Each transept has a three-light tracery window, a sill band, and prominently scaled angle buttresses. The west elevation, visible from the main entrance, features a subordered entrance porch with a three-light tracery window above, framed by clasping buttresses. Above this is a bell cote with a base, a middle bell stage reinforced by flying buttresses, and a crocheted spire. There are single-storey wings with lean-to roofs on either side, serving as a room and vestry, and approximating the position of the nave aisle.
Inside, the chapel has a moulded chancel arch, a wood panelled reredos and altar, and a chandelier in Gothic Revival style suspended from the boss of the crossing. The timber roof is supported by carved corbels, some of which are historiated, and features arched principals with tie and king posts adorned with Gothic cusping. The crossing is spanned by cusped, straight principals, with double chamfered purlins for each principal. The windows have deep sills and leaded lights with stained glass borders of original design. The west double door is planked and timber framed, with ornamental strap hinges. This chapel is part of a group of mid-19th century buildings that includes the Nonconformist Chapel, Gatelodge, entrance, and attached railings along East End Road.
