Description
The Nonconformist Chapel at East Finchley Cemetery is a funerary chapel built in 1854, designed by Barnet and Brick. It features a plinth of brick faced with Kentish ragstone and has stone dressings. The roof is slate and gabled. The chapel is rectangular in plan and consists of three bays in the Gothic Revival style. The ritual east end has a traceried roundel, while the center and eastmost bay have broad, two-light tracery windows. The westmost bay has narrower lights on each return and polygonal stair projections that lead to the substructure. The west front is the most prominent, featuring a subordered entrance with planked double doors that have metal strap hinges, and a three-light window with intersecting tracery and an ogival hood above. The gable has copings, kneelers, and crosses. Inside, the roof is supported by arched principals with a pair of through purlins on each slope, a chamfered ridge piece, and the heads of the principals are pierced by Gothic tracery. The ritual east wall has wood panelling and a reading desk on its own podium. This chapel is part of a group of mid-19th century buildings that includes the Anglican chapel, gate lodge, entrance, and railings on East End Road.
