Description
The gate lodge, entrance gates, piers, and railings to East Finchley Cemetery were built in 1854, designed by Barnet and Birch. The structure features Kentish ragstone facing with stone dressings and slate roofs. It is two storeys high and has an L-shaped plan. The east elevation facing East End Road includes a triple lancet window, an oriel window on the crosswing, and various other windows in the entrance range. The building is in the Gothic Revival style, with an entrance set in a porch that was boarded over at the time of writing. Above the porch, there is a two-light window that illuminates the stair hall, and a moulded stack is located on the return of the crosswing and the gable end of the crosswing.
Notable features include the triple lancet light on the ground floor of the crosswing, with an oriel window above supported by moulded corbels. To the left of the lodge, there is a gateway with a pedestrian gap and a wider carriageway, featuring stepped coping and a parapet. A low parapet wall extends southeast from the lodge, ending at a pair of gate piers that frame the carriageway, with the left pier also having a pedestrian gap. The piers are designed as setback buttresses. Metal gates are present at all openings, and stone piers along with metal railings extend from the low parapet wall at the northwest corner of the lodge, comprising a total of fourteen bays, with the railings in the third bay interrupted, turning the corner towards the A406. This structure is part of a group of mid-19th century buildings that includes the Nonconformist and Anglican chapels on East End Road. The lodge was noted as derelict during an inspection in June 1993.
