Description

Roehampton House, located at Queen Mary's Hospital, was built between 1710 and 1712 by Thomas Archer. It underwent alterations and the addition of advanced north and south wings from 1910 to 1913 by Sir Edwin Lutyens, who continued Archer's style and adhered closely to his original design intentions. The Lutyens additions are significant enough to warrant a Grade II* listing on their own.

The building is three stories tall with a basement and features a seven-window center block connected by five-window quadrants to the wings. It is constructed of brown brick with fine red brick dressings and has green slated roofs.

On the entrance front (west), there are moulded brick bands between the storeys, plain brick pilasters, and brick rustications at the corners and on the three-window center projection. The main cornice is located below the brick parapet, except for the three-window center, which has a stone cornice and balustrade. The semi-recessed windows have red gauged flat arches, dressings, projecting brick keyblocks, and shaped aprons. The central entrance feature consists of a doorway flanked by Doric pilasters that support an entablature and a broken segmental pediment, with a semi-circular-headed window above flanked by fluted Corinthian pilasters. The entrance is accessed by two flights of steps with a wrought iron ornamental balustrade.

At the angles of the block, there are one-storey quadrant brick arcades, and above these, the quadrants and wings designed by Lutyens are visible. On the north and south sides of the front courtyard, there are two-storey seven-window pavilions with three-window advanced centers, also designed by Lutyens.

The garden front (east) mirrors the west front but features a window in place of the entrance door and a niche instead of a window above. The south front is similar to the west front but has a pedimented stone central feature framing a 'stable door' window on the ground floor. Inside, there are notable original features, including a staircase, panelling, and carved woodwork.
