The Watchers Behind Downshire House (Roehampton University) Alton Estate

The Watchers behind Downshire House, located at Roehampton University on the Alton Estate, is a sculpture created in 1960 by Lynn Chadwick. It was installed in 1963 by the London County Council. This bronze sculpture, which stands over seven feet high on a low plinth, is cast from a frame of iron and a mixture of gypsum and iron filings. It features three abstract figures that convey a menacing and predatory character, reflecting Chadwick's concerns about a 'big brother' presence, an idea resonant with the political climate of the time. This work is a notable example of Chadwick's artistry, strategically placed to oversee the entire Alton West estate, recognized as one of the London County Council's significant architectural achievements, across Downshire Field. The sculpture provides a stark contrast to the agrarian 'Bull' by Robert Clatworthy situated at the bottom of the slope.
