Description
Downshire House, built around 1770 for the Marquess of Downshire, is a three-storey building featuring six windows and a two-storey, three-window splayed bay extension to the north. The structure is made of brown brick, with red segmental arches over recessed windows and red dressings at the jambs and angles. The entrance boasts a rusticated wooden doorcase adorned with fluted Doric pilasters, a triglyph frieze, and a segmental pediment that is broken over the pilasters, along with panelled reveals. The garden front includes stone bands at the first floor and first floor sills, a brick band at the second floor, and a stone bracketed cornice below the parapet. The building features brick rusticated quoins and a three-window splayed bay at the ground floor. R. W. Furze Brettingham carried out work at Downshire House for the second Marquess of Downshire, presumably around 1795.
