Description
The Children’s House (Nursery School) is a building dating from around 1923, designed by architect C A Voysey. It is located on a corner position on Eagling Road and is constructed of red brick with a stucco plinth. The building features a wide stucco band and eaves cornice above the first floor, along with wide bracketed eaves. It stands three storeys tall and has five windows, with the end bay slightly recessed. The windows vary in size, starting with very large ground floor sashes that have glazing bars, followed by smaller first-floor windows that are similar in style. Above these, there are very small casement windows, each consisting of three lights with glazing bars, forming a narrow band beneath the wide bracketed eaves cornice. The ground floor windows are adorned with moulded stucco architraves, while the first-floor windows have louvred shutters. The entrance door features a moulded stucco architrave, a fanlight, and a small flat hood. Above the fanlight is a bas relief enamelled mural depicting the Virgin and Child with two children, surrounded by a border of flowers and fruit. The facade facing Bruce Road has three windows and three storeys at the corner only. The remainder of the building is topped with a brick parapet that encloses a rooftop play area. There is also a door in the wall to the west that is part of the overall design.
