Description
This building comprises four houses, numbered 1 to 4, located on Wapping Pier Head, on the south side of Wapping High Street. Constructed in 1811, they were originally built as residences for employees of the London Docks. The houses are built of yellow stock brick, with some patching, and feature a stone cornice and a brick parapet. A stone band runs above the ground floor, and a stone plinth supports segmental arched basement windows. The buildings are three storeys high, with basements, and have eleven windows on the front elevation, including three in a rounded bay at one end; one window is blank. The southern return features three windows, while the northern return displays four windows (one blank) and one window on a rounded corner. All windows are sash windows with glazing bars. The ground floor windows are round arched, recessed, and set within a wider brick arch. Recessed first and second floor windows have flat, gauged arches. Number 1 has a distinctive porch in the Doric style. The iron railings and paved roadway of Wapping Pier Head are historically associated with the buildings, as are numbers 5 to 15 (consec), No. 4½, the Town of Ramsgate Public House, Oliver’s Wharf, a section of wall and entrance to London Docks, four bollards, Wapping Old Stairs, Wapping High Street.
