Description

The Town of Ramsgate Public House is an 18th-century building that stands on an earlier foundation, with later additions and extensive alterations to its facade. It is constructed of brown brick and features an eaves cornice and a blocking course, along with a stone band between the ground and first floors. The roof is not visible. The building has three storeys and dormers, with a single recessed window on the second floor flanked by brick side pilasters, featuring a sash window with vertical glazing bars. The first floor has a window with glazing bars, a corner door, and an additional window facing west. At the rear, there is a canted bay window on the first floor. Inside, the pub boasts beamed ceilings, benches, plank panelling, and an engraved glass screen. It is reputed that Judge Jeffreys was captured at this inn. The building is included for its interior, group value, and historical associations. The iron railings and paved roadway of Wapping Pier Head form a group with Nos 1 to 15 (consecutive) and No 4½, Town of Ramsgate Public House, Oliver's Wharf, and this section of the wall and entrance to London Docks, along with four bollards and Wapping Old Stairs on Wapping High Street.
