Description

St George's German and English Schools, located at numbers 55, 57, and 59 Alie Street, were built in 1877 by E A Gruning for the German Lutheran Church. These elementary schools for girls and boys feature red brick frontages and have an internal fireproof construction with slate roofs. The building consists of three storeys and an attic, with six bay classrooms, two on each floor. Staircases located in smaller bays at the ends lead to schoolteachers' flats on the second floor and into the attic.

The ground floor has casement windows under segmental heads, while the first floor features windows with keystones and pediments. The second floor has sash windows, all positioned between pilasters that rise to an attic centerpiece beneath a pediment. A high brick parapet and brick stacks that have been cut down are present. Doors on either side of the building are also under segmental heads, with the left door situated under a pediment and accompanied by a round window that connects to the rear entry. This rear entry leads to a former graveyard, which is now occupied by the Infants' School. The rear elevation is similar but simpler, featuring a date plaque in a moulded brick surround.

Inside, the building is simple but retains some fireplaces on the ground floor and in the attics. Stone staircases with wrought-iron balustrades add to the interior features.
