Description

No. 80, located at Three Colt Street, was built around 1850 as a corner public house. This three-storey building is faced with stucco and features five bays, with one bay being blind on the upper floors facing Three Colt Street. The corner has an inset bowed design with blind windows and a two-bay return to Narrow Street. The ground floor windows and doorways are highlighted by coupled Corinthian pilasters that rise from a plinth, supporting a deep fascia-frieze with a projecting box cornice and a blocking course that wraps around both parts of the building. There is a deep frieze below the bracketed main box cornice, which has a blocking course with raised dies and panels, particularly notable on the side facing Narrow Street, where it is supported by scrolls. The plain revealed sash windows alternate with tripartite windows, the latter on the first floor framed by Corinthian pilasters with friezes and moulded pediments. There are also two similarly framed single sash windows on the first floor facing Narrow Street. This building occupies a prominent corner site and is a good example of a mid-19th century public house with classical design, apparently unaltered, which is unusual. It holds importance for its group value, as it terminates a block of listed warehouses on Narrow Street and successfully turns the corner.
