Description

The George and Dragon Public House is a corner public house located at No. 151 Cleveland Street in the City of Westminster. It was rebuilt or recast around 1850 and features a stucco exterior with a slate roof in an Italianate style. The building stands three storeys tall with an attic and has three windows on the main façade, with a four-window return along Greenwell Street, which is continued by two-storey extensions.

The public house front is pilastered and includes panelled and glazed doors at both ends, splayed across the corner. It has an entablature fascia with a dentil cornice. The upper floors are adorned with architraved sash windows; the first-floor windows are enhanced with consoles and narrow panels above, connected by a band course at head level. The first-floor cornice is prominently broken forward over these windows and features a raised segmental pediment above the central window. The second-floor windows have swagged panels above them.

The building has quoin piers that are channelled on the first floor and panelled on the second floor, rising to a balustraded crowning cornice. This cornice is interrupted by a central flush set dormer, which is finished with a cornice and blocking course. The Greenwell Street side has similar architectural details, with the two-storey extension also featuring a balustraded parapet. The George and Dragon Public House is included in the register for its group value.
