Description
J. Evans is a terraced house and shop built around 1793, with a shopfront added around 1916 and the top two storeys rebuilt in the mid-20th century. The building features Flemish bond brickwork and has a double-depth plan.
The exterior is four storeys high, with two windows and a two-window return, one of which is blind, facing Warren Street. The shopfront is notable, displaying "J. EVANS/DAIRY FARMER" on a gilded glass fascia above. It includes a semicircular arch over a six-panelled door with a decorative fanlight to the left, and a half-glazed door with an overlight at the street corner. This is flanked by segmental-arched plate-glass shop windows, which are set in a glazed blue tile surround, with white tile panels beneath the windows and Art Nouveau floral decoration on the white tile strips beside the openings. The ground floor to the right, facing Warren Street, has channelled stucco and two square-headed 20th-century casement windows. The upper storeys feature flat brick arches over the 20th-century casement windows.
Inside, the shop has white glazed tile walls and an original marble shop counter adorned with hand-painted pastoral scenes set in blue tile frames below.
The building also has attached cast-iron railings to the areas. Historically, the Post Office Directory notes the arrival of "J. Evans, dairyman" in 1916. This shop is one of the best surviving examples of a Welsh dairy, which were common in London in the early 20th century but are now extremely rare. The tilework in this shop is particularly attractive.
