Description

Numbers 9 and 10, together with their attached railings, form part of the east side of Fitzroy Square, although they are not part of the formal, symmetrical design of the square. The houses date from around 1794, as evidenced by a surviving drawing by Robert Adam. Number 10 has undergone alterations using stucco in the mid-19th century.

Number 9 is constructed of Portland stone, with a slate mansard roof and dormers. It is three storeys high, with an additional attic, and features three windows per floor. The round-arched doorway has pilaster-jambs supporting a cornice head; above is a fanlight and a panelled door. A plain band runs along the first floor. The square-headed recessed sash windows on the first floor have cast-iron balconies. A cornice finishes the building, above a balustraded parapet.

Number 10 features stucco work, with a rusticated ground floor. It is four storeys high, with a basement, and also features three windows per floor. The round-arched doorway has similar pilaster-jambs and cornice head as number 9, leading to a radial patterned fanlight and a panelled door. The architraved recessed sash windows are original, except for the first floor, which has casements with cast-iron balconies. A secondary cornice is present at the second-floor level, above which lies the main cornice and a blocking course. The interiors have not been inspected.

Attached to the properties are cast-iron railings, complete with urn finials to the areas.
