Description

This building comprises a restaurant, offices, and flats, originally two terraced houses dating from the late 18th century, with alterations made in the late 20th century. The front is built of multi-coloured stock brick, some of which has been replaced, likely after bomb damage; No. 159 has a slate roof, while No. 161 has concrete tiles. The building is four storeys high with cellars, containing two windows on each side. Both have late 20th-century shopfronts, with house doors to the left. The upper floors feature gauged red brick flat arches over recessed sash windows, most of which are late 20th-century replacements. The rear elevation of No. 161 retains three early 19th-century sashes with cambered head linings and narrow glazing bars, and one later 19th-century sash.

The interior of No. 161 includes vaulted brick cellars, a round-headed arch decorated with bracket and wreath and spear motifs, and a dogleg staircase with stick balusters and column newels. No. 159 also appears to have vaulted brick cellars and a similar staircase. The ground floor of No. 161 and the basement of both Nos 159 and 161 are connected to No. 15 Warren Street.

The building is listed for its group value alongside a series of other listed buildings in Warren Street. Together with Nos 131-137 Whitfield Street, they are the only remaining original buildings of what was once a terraced street, all originally with early shopfronts, and associated with the former Fitzroy Market.
