Description

This listing describes a row of five terraced houses located at numbers 52 to 56 and 60 to 62 on Grafton Way, built around 1792 by C Mead for W and J Adam. The houses are constructed of yellow stock brick, with numbers 52 and 56 featuring stucco ground floors and plain stucco first-floor sill bands.

The buildings are four storeys high, including basements, with three windows each, except for number 62, which has two windows. They have gauged brick flat arches over recessed sash windows, and parapets on the roof.

Number 52 has a stucco ground floor with a round-arched doorway that includes sidelights, an enriched entablature-head, a patterned radial fanlight, and a panelled door. Number 54 features a 20th-century reproduction shopfront with Ionic pilasters and bowed windows, along with a house door. Number 56 also has a stucco ground floor and a round-arched doorway with sidelights, an enriched entablature-head, a radial patterned fanlight, and a panelled door, as well as a continuous cast-iron balcony at the first-floor level. Number 60 has a round-arched doorway supported by Roman Doric columns, an enriched entablature-head, a radial patterned fanlight, and a panelled door. Number 62 features a round-arched doorway with a stucco cavetto surround, a cornice-head, a radial fanlight, and a panelled door.

The interiors have not been inspected but are noted to retain some panelled hall dados and open staircases with square balusters and column-newels. The houses also have attached cast-iron railings with urn finials surrounding the area.
