Description
Number 58 is a terraced house built around 1792 by C Mead for W and J Adam. It is constructed of yellow stock brick and has four storeys plus a basement, featuring three windows. The round-arched doorway is adorned with Roman Doric columns that support an enriched entablature-head, along with a patterned radial fanlight and a panelled door. There is a continuous cast-iron balcony at the first-floor level, and gauged brick flat arches above the recessed sash windows. The building has a parapet.
Inside, the house retains its original staircase, a panelled hall, and some panelled rooms. The property is complemented by attached cast-iron railings with urn finials in the area.
Historically, this house was home to Francisco de Miranda, and a stone plaque between the ground floor windows commemorates him. It reads, "Francisco de Miranda 1750-1816 lived in this house between 1803 & 1810. Born in Caracas, Venezuela. He was the forerunner of the independence of the republics of Latin America. Here he met in 1810 the Liberator Simon Bolivar."
