Description

The Church of St Anne, located on Commercial Road in Limehouse, was built between 1712 and 1730 and designed by architect Nicholas Hawksmoor. It is constructed of white ashlar stone and stands on a high plinth with rusticated corners. The church features an eaves cornice and two short eastern towers, each with three oblong lancets. There is a blocking course and square windows for the crypt, while seven round-arched windows are positioned above. Access to the church is via flights of steps leading to the northern, southern, and western doors. The western lantern tower is a prominent feature in the local landscape and can be seen from the River Thames. The interior of the church is noted for its fine design. The church is part of a group that includes the garden wall to the former St Anne's Rectory, Limehouse Town Hall, the churchyard walls, railings, gates, gate piers, and a war memorial, as well as several nearby properties on Newell Street and the Limehouse Church Institute on Three Colt Street.
