Description
Christ Church, built between 1723 and 1729 and designed by architect Nicholas Hawksmoor, is a prominent structure in the Spitalfields area, featuring a striking white ashlar tower and spire. The church has a western portico supported by four giant Tuscan columns and a central semi-circular arch, a design element that is echoed in the facade beneath the tower. There are steps leading up to the entrance. The interior, excluding the crypt, is currently closed for restoration.
The church is accompanied by two sets of gate piers leading to its churchyard, which date from the 18th century. These consist of two pairs of tall white stone gate piers topped with caps, with the ones closest to Fournier Street featuring ball finials.
Christ Church, along with the Drinking Fountain and Trough and five bollards, forms a cohesive group with the Ten Bells Public House. It is part of a larger grouping on Commercial Street and is also included in the group centered around Fournier Street.
