Description
The Chapel of Nunhead Cemetery is an Anglican cemetery chapel, now deconsecrated, built in 1844 by Thomas Little. It is constructed of rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings. The chapel features a square porte-cochere that leads into a transverse bay, which then opens into the main hexagonal space of the chapel. The impressive porte-cochere has a ribbed vault, four very tall and slender pinnacles, and intricate stone details in the Decorated style. At each end of the transverse bay, there are three-light windows with flowing tracery. There is one other visible window, which has two lights and similar reticulated tracery, while the remaining windows are obscured by ivy. Despite its current poor condition, the building remains a striking presence at the head of the avenue facing the main gates.
