Description
The monument to John Moritz Oppenheim and Frederick Schroeter, located in Nunhead Cemetery, was created around 1876 by monumental mason H Daniel. It is made of Portland stone and features Carrara marble reliefs. The structure consists of a square plinth on a two-stage base, with marble bas-reliefs on three sides and an inscription on the fourth side. The reliefs illustrate an angel beside a death-bed, an angel next to a female bust on a plinth being touched by a seated, blind mourning man, and a depiction of a woman with brushes and a palette. These representations are notable for their unique portrayal of death and mourning, particularly as Oppenheim had been blind for the last twenty years of his life.
