Description
The monument to Vincent Figgins is a funerary structure located in Nunhead Cemetery, dating from around 1844. It was designed by William Pettit Griffith and is made of Portland stone. The monument features a plain square stele, which was originally topped with an urn that is now missing. This stele is set within a canopy supported by four columns with lotus-leaf capitals, and it is topped with triangular pediments and acroteria. At the corners of the lower stage of the base, there are small pedimented aedicules that are inspired by Roman cinerary urns. Vincent Figgins, the individual commemorated by this monument, was a notable type-founder in the City of London.
