Description

The Kentish Drovers Public House, dating circa 1840, is a notable example of a public house constructed in painted brick with polished stone and timber detailing to the ground floor, which has been altered. The building is situated on Old Kent Road, Southwark, and features a rounded corner extending along Commercial Way. The Old Kent Road elevation is three storeys with projecting side sections topped by low, pediment-like gables and deep eaves. The ground floor projects around the corner and along the return, incorporating modified Ionic pilasters supporting a fascia board and dentil cornice, along with flanking windows. Sash windows with glazing bars are present on the upper floors, most with flat, gauged-brick arches, except for the outer two windows on the first floor of the main elevation, which have segmental arches. Entrances are located at the canted corner and on the far left. A large, prominent signboard, depicting drovers in a landscape, is positioned at second-floor level on the corner and along the return. The interior features composite columns supporting the first floor, along with late 19th-century carved mahogany bar fittings and engraved glass.
