Description
Park Lodge, located next to Old College Gate in Dulwich Park, is a lodge built in 1889 by the London County Council Architects' Department. It is constructed of red brick in English bond, featuring tilehanging and mock box-framing on the first floor and gables that have oversailing hampers. The roofs are tiled and designed in an Old English style.
The building has a cross wing plan, with gables facing both the west range and the return of the east wing, each adorned with ornamental barge-boards. It stands two and a half storeys tall, with two-storey bays beneath each hamper; the bay on the west wing is rectangular and becomes canted, while the east wing's bay is canted. Each of these sections is one window wide.
The entrance is located under a Jacobean-style timber-framed porch, positioned at the corner between the two wings, which is set into a square projection that contains the entrance hall. Above the entrance, a catslide dormer lights the stair hall, and there is a two-light window on the west gable. The building features ornamental rainwater heads.
To the left, or west return, there is a picturesque elevation with a chimney breast that steps up in stages to a box-framed gable. In the center, a rubbed brick plaque is inscribed with "L.C.C. 1889," and the chimney finishes as a dormer stack. The stacks have been rebuilt to their original pattern since 1980. The lodge forms a group with Old College Gate and Dulwich Old College.
