Description

The Lodge, situated on a peninsular site at Camden Crescent with a west-facing entrance on Camden Row, dates to the early 19th century and has undergone 20th-century alterations. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with a slate roof, gabled to the returns, featuring clay ridge tiles, a gabled dormer positioned slightly left of the front, and a moulded stack to the rear.

The lodge is a single-storey, two-window range building. It has an eaves cornice and eaves band running around the exterior. A five-panel door is placed beneath a shallow hood supported by shaped brackets, flanked by C20 nine-paned windows. The gable end of the south-right return features a pediment above a returned cornice. Panelled pilasters support a smaller cornice above a wide central six/six-pane sash window with splayed reveals; this window may originally have been an eight/eight-pane sash. The rear of the lodge contains a C20 door and a nine-pane window to the right. Internally, a 1979 inspection revealed a sliding sash window on the east side of the back room, with plaster on lath over stone walls.

A rough ashlar wall, approximately 1 metre high, is attached to the rear and borders the north side of the back garden, turning to follow Camden Crescent. Approximately 1 metre from the south-west corner of the lodge stands a taller pier supporting a wrought iron lamp bracket. The cross plan support of the lamp bracket features vertical crossed semicircles at the base and four vertical, square-section railings converging towards a central horizontal cross at the top. A square lid and finial cover the scrolled support, which once held a lamp bowl (now replaced with a C20 lamp). Modern railings are situated to the left. A porch was demolished in 1979. This lodge is a lesser but significant part of the Camden Crescent, providing watchman’s accommodation at the crescent's entrance.
